Turning Struggle into Strength

With grit and determination, Jessie rerouted herself and her chapter onto paths to success.

Jessie W.’s childhood was a tumultuous one. Growing up in a home marked by instability, she spent years moving from place to place. By the time she reached high school, she had been relocated more than a dozen times.

“I learned very early that if something good was going to happen in my life, I was going to have to make it happen,” she says.

At just 16, the high schooler moved out, determined to move up in life. She dedicated herself to working and studying while moving between friends’ homes and couch surfing. Defying expectations, she graduated with a 4.0 GPA and continued to build herself a positive path forward.

Years later, she would apply the same resilience that allowed her to grow despite challenging circumstances to help revive a struggling Woman’s Life chapter.

A Life Rebuilt and Reimagined

Jessie found the Catholic faith through her sweetheart, whom she happily married at 19. They had five children together, and she spent decades as a committed stay-at-home, churchgoing, homeschooling mother. She says that season became a time of healing for her as she gave them a stable, loving childhood she only could’ve dreamed of as a kid.

“God can redeem anything,” she says.

As her children grew, Jessie stepped into a new chapter of success—finishing her college degree, launching a career in marketing and communications and navigating what she describes as a second “growing up” in midlife.

“I felt like I was starting all over again,” she says.

That transition came with some uncertainty. Entering professional spaces after years at home, Jessie questioned where she fit in and how she would build meaningful connections. She found—and went on to help build—the supportive community she craved through Woman’s Life.

The Spark That Started Something New

Jessie connected with Woman’s Life in an unexpected way. A car fire on her street drew neighbors outside to see what was happening, and among the onlookers, Jessie spotted Heather B.—a woman she had seen and admired leading events in the community. Jessie reached out to Heather on Facebook, and they began building a friendship that would soon extend far beyond their neighborhood.

Heather had been a member of Woman’s Life for years, but like many organizations, Chapter 810 Port Huron, Michigan, had lost momentum since the COVID-19 pandemic. Meetings slowed. Membership dwindled.

“It was still technically an active chapter, but it had essentially fizzled out,” Heather says.

With a positive outlook like Jessie’s, Heather saw potential where others may have seen roadblocks.

“I knew it had been something wonderful before and it could be again,” Heather says.

Her timing aligned with Jessie’s as Jessie was seeking a way to reconnect—with her community, with purpose and with other women navigating similar life transitions.

Soon, the two found themselves at a bank trying to revive a chapter with little more than a checkbook, a few documents and a shared belief that something meaningful could grow.

Building Something That Lasts

The dynamic duo made their chapter roles official as Heather took on the title of president and Jessie, vice president. In the early days, meetings were small— sometimes just the two of them.

“We were lucky to get five people on a good day,” Heather says.

But instead of focusing on quantity, they focused on quality.

They were intentional about who they invited. They created space for connection. They kept meetings welcoming, meaningful and flexible—whether someone could commit to one event a year or many.

“We realize that alone we can do little, but when we come together, we can do great things,” Heather says.

They are seeing that philosophy take root in a slow and steady way.

“If you just bring one person in and then that person brings one person in, that’s how it grows,” Jessie says.

Over time, the chapter evolved into a thriving group of more than 40 passionate members.

A Different Kind of Community

From the beginning, Jessie and Heather were intentional about what they wanted the chapter to be.

They didn’t want it to feel exclusive. They didn’t want it to feel like another obligation. They wanted it to feel like a place of belonging.

“I think what makes it work is that we show up for each other,” Heather says.

Meetings aren’t just about taking care of business. They are a place for conversation, encouragement and shared experiences. For Jessie, that sense of connection has been transformative.

“It became an organized way to plug in—not just to serve, but to build real friendships,” she says.

The chapter’s identity reflects that spirit.

Their “pay it forward” mission centers on service—whether supporting first responders, raising funds for local nonprofits or helping individuals in need.

But just as important is what happens in between.

“We have so much fun, and we really love each other,” Jessie says.

Growth That Goes Beyond the Chapter

Today, Chapter 810 stands as a reflection of what can happen when resilience meets opportunity.

For Jessie, the journey from instability to leadership hasn’t been about perfection—it’s been about persistence.

Together, Jessie and Heather have created more than a revived chapter. They’ve built a space where women can connect, serve and grow toward a better future regardless of their pasts.
